Nitrate is another parameter usually encountered in soils or groundwater – which is a main source for drinking water in many places. In general, nitrate is harmless for people; but in the human body nitrate is formed into nitrite, which can be dangerous to health.
Ammonium, for example, is mainly encountered in wastewater. For fishes, ammonium is toxic in very small concentrations already. As a consequence, water spaces with an ammonium concentration of 1 mg/l are not suitable for them.
