To analyze in detail the biological effects of silver nanoparticles, it is necessary to separate the effects produced due to the nanoscale length of the particles and those produced due to the ions released.
These ions are either present in the initial particle dispersion or released by the nanoparticles over time.

The main objective of the silver ion selective electrode is to control the activity of ions released in the presence of silver nanoparticles.
Silver ions are mainly found and analyzed in plating baths.
